ALICE SHINTANI’s (b. 1971, São Paulo) practice is grounded in an expanded understanding of painting as a site of spatial, social, and institutional inquiry. Working across painting, installation, collective actions, and interventions in public space, she investigates the ways images, objects, and gestures circulate between everyday life and the structures that frame contemporary art. Rather than treating painting as a discrete medium, Shintani approaches it as a mode of thinking—one that extends into architecture, urban space, and encounters with diverse publics.

Recent solo exhibitions include Echo at SMU Meadows School of the Arts, Dallas (2026); Caverna at Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz, Ribeirão Preto (2024); and Mata ON SALE at Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri, São Paulo (2021). Her work has also been presented in public projects at Americas Society, New York (2024), Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, São Paulo (2019), and across public sites in São Paulo (2017). Shintani has participated in major group exhibitions including the 34th São Paulo Biennial and its international touring program, 100 Anos da Arte Brasileira at the G20 Summit (2024), and exhibitions at the LUMA Foundation, Arles; Gasworks, London; Delfina Foundation, London; and Gomide & Co., São Paulo. Her work is held in the collections of the LUMA Foundation, Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, and the Palácio do Itamaraty.

Shintani is currently on view in the two-person show, Montanha e Vale: Tomie Ohtake e Alice Shintani, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2026).

She is represented by Alison Bradley Projects in the United States in collaboration with Almeida & Dale, São Paulo. Alison Bradley Projects will present Shintani’s first US solo exhibition in Fall 2027.
