Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art announces Kunié Sugiura: Discoveries

On view September 18 – December 21, 2025

Kunié Sugiura (born 1942 in Japan) has been working in photography for some sixty years, mostly in the New York City studio where she has also lived since 1974. Her oeuvre includes assemblages that combine photography and painting, large-scale photographic canvases, and a range of photograms whose subjects have been botanical, human, and animal.

A relentless experimentation and scientific exploration, driven by artistic impulse, are hallmarks of Sugiura’s engagement with photography. Discoveries highlights her ongoing connections to Japan, including a recent acquisition to the permanent collection.

This exhibition was supported by the Richard Sukenik ’59 Endowment for Photography and a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
